Revelation 22:6
Revelation 22:66Then the angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel to show His servants what must soon take place.”
JWs read as a straightforward statement that Jehovah is the one who sent the angel to reveal what must take place. The NWT inserts "Jehovah" here (from "the Lord God"), reinforcing their view that the angel belongs exclusively to God the Father. They use the chain of authority from — God gave the revelation to Jesus, who sent the angel to John — to argue that Jesus merely relayed God's angel rather than owning it independently. This supports their claim that Jesus is God's agent, not God himself.
The Protestant reading notes that says "the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel" — using possessive language ("his angel") to indicate ownership. When this is compared with , where Jesus says "I, Jesus, have sent my angel," the same angel and the same mission are claimed by both God and Jesus using identical possessive constructions. If Jesus were merely relaying, the text would say "the angel of God" or "Jehovah's angel whom I forwarded" — but Jesus claims personal ownership. The NWT's own insertion of "Jehovah" in verse 6 actually sharpens the parallel: the more emphatically the verse attributes angel-sending to Jehovah, the more striking it is that Jesus claims the identical authority just ten verses later. This only works if Jesus shares Jehovah's identity and authority.
