JW Usage

is the foundation text for the Watchtower's "faithful and discreet slave" doctrine — the textual hook on which the entire Governing Body authority claim hangs. JWs are taught that the slave is exclusively the eleven men currently sitting on the Governing Body in Warwick, New York (Jody Jedele and Jacob Rumph appointed 5 October 2024; Anthony Morris III removed February 2023), but only when "acting collectively" in their teaching role. Watchtower publications routinely apply phrases such as "the channel through which Jesus is feeding his sheep" and "our spiritual health and our relationship with God depend on this channel" (Watchtower, 15 July 2013, p. 20) directly to this verse. The teaching has shifted repeatedly: Russell was the slave, then he was not; all the anointed were the slave, then they were not; in 2012 the slave was formally redefined to be the Governing Body itself, the very position that the 1 March 1981 Watchtower (pp. 24-26) had explicitly condemned as "apostasy" without scriptural support.

Protestant Usage

is a question, not an identification. Jesus asks "Who really is the faithful and discreet slave...?" — a rhetorical question that invites every disciple to test themselves against the parable, not a coded prophecy of a twentieth-century corporate body. The verse sits inside a series of four parables (faithful servant, ten virgins, talents, sheep and goats) that all teach individual readiness for the master's return; reading it as the charter for an institutional office tears it out of its own literary context. Two further pressure points: (1) in the parable the master appoints the slave before departing and judges him on his return — the Watchtower timeline of "appointed in 1919, judged later" inverts the parable's own sequence; (2) the test the parable itself supplies is the slave's faithful conduct ("whom his master on arriving finds doing so"), and that test cuts hard against a body whose own publications have reversed themselves on 1914, on the generation, on superior authorities, on alternative service, and on its own identity. Used as the central exhibit in arguments 027 (governing-body), 091 (faithful-slave-2012-reversal), and 121 (name-the-channel) — three independent angles on the same textual misuse.
