One Is Your Teacher — the Christ

Matthew 23:8-10
Authority Strong
Doorstep Question
"Your NWT of has Jesus saying, "Do not you be called Rabbi, for one is your Teacher, and all of you are brothers." Verse 10 adds, "Neither be called leaders, for your Leader is one, the Christ." The Governing Body calls itself the "faithful and discreet slave" appointed to lead and teach all Jehovah's Witnesses. But Jesus said there is only ONE Teacher, ONE Leader — the Christ. How does the Governing Body fit into that? "
JW Claim

Jesus appointed a "faithful and discreet slave" to dispense spiritual food at
the proper time (Matthew 24:45). The Governing Body is that slave, and Jehovah's
Witnesses must accept its teaching as authoritative. This is not replacing Christ
as Teacher — the Governing Body is simply the channel Christ uses.

Strategy

This argument uses Jesus' own prohibition against authoritative human teachers to challenge the Governing Body's claim. It pairs naturally with the Berean test and the "name the channel" argument.

  1. Read together in the NWT. Jesus gives three prohibitions: do not be called Rabbi (v. 8), do not call anyone Father (v. 9), do not be called leaders (v. 10). The NWT renders v. 8 as "one is your Teacher" and v. 10 as "your Leader is one, the Christ."
  2. Ask: "If Christ is the one Teacher and the one Leader, and Christians are not to be called leaders in this sense, how does the Governing Body's claim to be the authoritative teacher of all Witnesses fit with Jesus' words?"
  3. Note the context: Jesus is rebuking the Pharisees and scribes for loving positions of authority and making themselves indispensable mediators of God's will. He then says "all of YOU are brothers" (v. 8) — a flat, non-hierarchical structure where Christ alone holds the teaching chair.
  4. Contrast with in the NWT: "The anointing that you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to be teaching you." John tells Christians they have the Holy Spirit as their teacher — not a governing body.
  5. And in the NWT: "We are preaching, not about ourselves, but about Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake." Paul explicitly denies positioning himself as a mediating authority. He points people to Christ.
Key Insight

Jesus prohibited His followers from claiming the role of authoritative teacher or leader: "One is your Teacher" ( NWT) and "your Leader is one, the Christ" ( NWT). The Governing Body's claim to be the sole channel of spiritual teaching directly contradicts this command.

Likely JW Response 1

Jesus is the ultimate Teacher, but He uses human instruments like the Governing Body to teach.

Your Counter

Every leader who has claimed exclusive spiritual authority in history has made this claim — "I am not replacing Christ, I am just His channel." But Jesus anticipated exactly this by saying "do not you be called Rabbi" and "neither be called leaders." He did not add "unless you are the faithful slave." The prohibition is absolute. Yes, there are teachers in the church () — but they are accountable to Scripture, not treated as an infallible channel. The Governing Body demands obedience even when Witnesses cannot verify its teachings from Scripture alone.

Likely JW Response 2

Matthew 23 is about the Pharisees, not about Christian leadership.

Your Counter

Read verses 8-10 again. Jesus turns FROM the Pharisees TO His own disciples and says "But YOU — do not you be called Rabbi." He is giving instructions to His followers about how they must not replicate the Pharisaic pattern. That is exactly the pattern the Governing Body replicates — an authoritative body whose interpretations must be accepted without independent verification.

What to Avoid

Do not imply that all Christian teaching or pastoral leadership is wrong. The NT affirms teachers, elders, and pastors (Ephesians 4:11; 1 Timothy 3). The issue is the claim to exclusive, unchallengeable authority — "one Teacher" means no human body replaces Christ as the ultimate interpretive authority.

Homework to Assign

Read Matthew 23 through verse 12 in the NWT until you can recite verses 8-10 from memory, including "one is your Teacher" and "your Leader is one, the Christ". Notice the point where Jesus turns from describing the Pharisees to addressing his own disciples. Then read in its setting and , and confirm these NWT renderings on jw.org. Read how jw.org describes the faithful and discreet slave of so you represent the claim fairly. Practise the doorstep question aloud as an honest puzzle, not an accusation. Prepare for "Matthew 23 is about the Pharisees, not Christian leadership": show from verse 8 that Jesus says "But you" — he is instructing his own followers not to repeat the Pharisaic pattern.
