JW Usage

JWs affirm as a real promise of forgiveness, but they read it through the filter of organisational accountability. For sins classified as "serious" in Shepherd the Flock of God, confession to Jehovah is considered insufficient on its own — the matter must also be brought to elders, and a judicial committee evaluates whether repentance is genuine before forgiveness is functionally extended in the congregation. The verse is held to be true theologically while its pastoral force is rerouted through the elder pathway. JWs are not cynical about this — many sincerely believe Jehovah's mercy travels best through his organisation's discipline structures.

Protestant Usage

The verse names two parties: the believer who confesses, and the faithful and just God who forgives and cleanses. There is no third party in the verse and none implied by the surrounding context. Confession is direct. Forgiveness is direct. Cleansing is direct. The guarantee is anchored not in the believer's performance but in God's own faithfulness and justice — both attributes ultimately satisfied in the cross (). On the doorstep, pair this with (confident approach to the throne of grace) and (the father runs to the son while he is still a long way off). The Witness fighting hidden sin needs to hear that the architecture of forgiveness in is two-party, not three-party — the grace runs from God to the confessor without an intervening tribunal. That is not licence; it is the gospel.
