Pornography and Judicial Escalation — From Tribunal to Throne

1 Corinthians 10:13 — A way of escape, not a way of removal
Sanctification Moderate Tone-safe
Doorstep Question
"In your congregation, if a man confesses that he is fighting a struggle with pornography, where does that conversation go? In the New Testament the man fighting that struggle is Romans 7 Paul — and promises God provides a way of escape. Does the brother walking into the back room with the elders walk out into rescue, or into reproof? "
JW Claim

Pornography use is "brazen conduct" (porneia / aselgeia) and falls under
scriptural disciplinary categories. When a baptised brother confesses
pornography use to elders, a judicial committee evaluates the severity,
frequency, and repentance and applies appropriate discipline — private or
public reproof, or removal. This protects the congregation's spiritual
cleanness (1 Corinthians 5:6, "a little leaven leavens the whole lump")
and motivates serious correction. Mercy without consequences cheapens
Jehovah's standards.

Strategy
  1. Make it clear from the start: this argument is not permissive about pornography. Scripture treats sexual integrity as serious — (lust = adultery in heart), (sanctification includes abstaining from sexual immorality), (flee porneia; your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit). The Protestant position fully agrees that pornography is a real spiritual issue. The argument is about HOW the church responds to the man fighting it. The Watchtower model is escalation to a tribunal; the New Testament model is escalation to grace.
  2. Read with your friend. This is Paul — apostle Paul, the inspired writer of fourteen New Testament letters — describing the inner war: "what I want to do, I do not do… What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" Paul's testimony is not "I never struggled" but "I struggled and was rescued by Christ". The man fighting pornography is in Paul's category. immediately follows: "there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus". The logical flow is: confession of ongoing struggle → no condemnation → walk by the Spirit (). Discipline is not the next step; deliverance through union with Christ is.
  3. Move to . "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it". Notice the "escape" — God's promised structure for the tempted believer is rescue from the temptation, not removal from the congregation. The Watchtower system supplies the inverse: confession risks removal (literal disfellowshipping, in serious cases), so the believer is trained NOT to confess. The result is the man fights alone, in shame, with the system designed to rescue him locked behind a tribunal door.
  4. Apply and . James — "confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed". Confession in the New Testament is mutual and aimed at healing, not upward to a panel of judges and aimed at classification. — "if someone is caught in a trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted". The restorer is enjoined to consider his own fragility — a posture incompatible with the elders' tribunal procedure where the elder serves as adjudicator over the brother. The biblical model assumes a community of fellow strugglers; the Watchtower model assumes a hierarchy of stable judges.
  5. Make the pastoral offer. The Christian gospel does not discount the weight of pornography use; it provides a means of recovery the judicial system actively obstructs. A struggling brother in a Protestant evangelical context can name the sin to a trusted brother, pray with him, set up accountability, fight by the Spirit ( — "if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live"), and walk in confidence ("if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"). None of those steps put his standing in the household at risk. None of them put his family at risk of his removal. The architecture is built for rescue, not for classification. Same sin; opposite system response.
Key Insight

Scripture treats sexual sin with deadly seriousness AND provides a rescue architecture for the believer who falls. The Watchtower's judicial-committee response to pornography use replaces the rescue architecture (mutual confession, accountability, Spirit-empowered resistance, no condemnation in Christ) with a classification architecture (charge, hearing, reproof or removal). The result is that confession itself becomes too costly to attempt, the brother fights alone in shame, and the institutional response inverts the New Testament model — from "way of escape" (1 Cor 10:13) to "way of removal".

Likely JW Response 1

Pornography is porneia / brazen conduct — it has to be addressed seriously. Mercy without consequences is cheap grace.

Your Counter

Agreed that pornography is serious — scripture treats it that way (; ). The disagreement is about what serious treatment looks like. The New Testament's serious treatment is union with Christ in his death (), mutual confession (), Spirit-empowered mortification (), restoration in gentleness () and bold approach to grace (). All of these treat the sin as grave AND treat the sinner as someone to be rescued. Reproof and removal treat the sin as grave AND treat the sinner as someone to be classified. Bonhoeffer's "cheap grace" was grace without discipleship — not grace without tribunals. Paul's letter to the Galatians is precisely about the danger of replacing grace with a system of bookkeeping over the flesh.

Likely JW Response 2

1 Corinthians 5 says expel the wicked person — Paul disciplined sexual sin.

Your Counter

1 Corinthians 5 is about a man living in open, unrepentant incestuous adultery — sustained, public, with the church's acquiescence. It is not the same situation as a brother privately fighting pornography and confessing the struggle. And note — Paul's follow-up to that very case, urging forgiveness, comfort, and restoration so the man would not be "overwhelmed by excessive sorrow". Paul's discipline pattern is brief expulsion of the unrepentant aimed at rapid restoration. The Watchtower pattern routinely escalates a private confession of struggle to public reproof, sometimes to removal, with extended reinstatement timelines. That is a different machine.

Likely JW Response 3

Without judicial structure, what would stop a brother from continuing in sin?

Your Counter

Three things scripture appeals to: union with Christ (Romans 6 — we died to sin; how can we still live in it?), the indwelling Spirit ( — "by the Spirit put to death the deeds of the body"), and mutual accountability among brothers (, — "stir up one another to love and good works"). The early church operated for centuries on those mechanisms; men walked away from sexual sin in droves. The Watchtower's judicial machinery is not where holiness comes from. Holiness comes from Spirit-formed identity in Christ, supported by community — precisely what the tribunal interrupts by making confession institutionally costly.

Likely JW Response 4

If pornography is so easy to escape via grace, why are so many men still trapped?

Your Counter

Because grace is not a magic switch — it operates through discipleship: walking by the Spirit (), transparent community (; ), the ordinary means of word and prayer, sometimes professional help for compulsive patterns. The Protestant church does not claim a perfect track record on this — many men still struggle, and we have our own failures. The argument is not that the Protestant system has no struggling men; it is that the Watchtower system actively obstructs the rescue mechanism scripture prescribes. A man hiding pornography use because he fears the elders is a system failure, not a Spirit failure.

What to Avoid

Do not be flippant about pornography. Many Witnesses have suffered real harm from compulsive use — themselves, their wives, their children — and the seriousness of the sin is not the issue. Do not imply Protestant churches have this fully solved; we don't. Do not pry into the personal history of the Witness in front of you; pornography shame is acute and the conversation must stay third-person unless they invite otherwise. Lead with Romans 7:15-25 as Paul's own struggle and 1 Corinthians 10:13 as God's promise; let the architectural difference (rescue vs classification) speak. If they share a personal story, switch from argument mode to prayer mode; offer to pray with them.
