Christ Returned Invisibly in 1914

Watchtower Teaching

JWs teach that Jesus Christ returned invisibly in 1914, beginning his heavenly reign as King. This 'presence' (parousia) is undetectable by human senses and can only be discerned through world events interpreted as 'signs of the last days.' The 1914 date is calculated from a speculative reading of Daniel 4's 'seven times' prophecy starting from 607 BCE — a date rejected by mainstream archaeology and historiography, which places Jerusalem's fall in 587/586 BCE.

Why This Matters

If Christ returned invisibly in 1914, then the Governing Body's entire authority claim depends on it — they teach that Jesus inspected all Christian groups in 1918–1919 and chose the Bible Students (now JWs) as his 'faithful and discreet slave.' Remove 1914 and the appointment collapses. Yet says Jesus will return 'in the same way you have seen him go into heaven' — visibly, bodily, publicly. says 'every eye will see him.' And the 607 BCE cornerstone is contradicted by thousands of cuneiform tablets, the Babylonian Chronicles, and the astronomical diaries — all pointing to 587/586 BCE, which breaks the calculation entirely.
