Christ's parousia was an invisible presence beginning in 1914.
Separating three categories eliminates the JW's entire basis for 1914 AND preserves for the genuine future return. The exegetical key is : the Son of Man 'coming on the clouds' is going UP to the Ancient of Days to receive the kingdom — not descending to earth. The direction of movement is toward heaven, not toward earth. This is the Ascension, not the Second Coming. Once this is recognised, the 'coming on the clouds' language in Matthew 24 refers to Christ's enthronement and His subsequent judgement on Jerusalem in AD 70 — not an invisible arrival in 1914. The JW has no text left to support an invisible coming in 1914. Positive evidence for the AD 70 fulfilment is overwhelming: Josephus documents the fulfilment of every Olivet warning within that generation — wars (the Jewish revolt of AD 66), famines (the siege famine Josephus describes in horrific detail), earthquakes (including the Pompeii earthquake of ~62 AD, one of the largest in recorded history), false messiahs (Josephus names several), and the gospel preached to the known world (Paul declares it preached 'to every creature under heaven' in ). Eusebius records the Jerusalem church fleeing to Pella before the siege — they understood and obeyed Jesus' warning in real time. Even the Pax Romana context is significant: when Jesus predicted wars, Rome was enforcing peace across the empire. His disciples would have been shocked — and within a generation, it came to pass.
A parousia (παρουσία) is a consequential royal arrival — like a Caesar visiting a province, with real-world effects: coinage issued, proclamations made, civic life transformed. Christ's AD 70 judgement was unmistakably consequential — the temple destroyed, the priesthood ended, the sacrificial system terminated, the city razed. 1914 had zero verifiable consequences except the Watchtower claiming authority. A parousia without consequences is no parousia at all.
You use Matthew 24 for the visible return, we use it for the invisible presence.
If Matthew 24 was fulfilled in AD 70, you eliminate their basis for 1914 AND you still have standing untouched for the future return. confirms this: the Son of Man comes on the clouds TO the Ancient of Days — going up to receive dominion, not descending to earth. The direction of movement is toward heaven. This is the Ascension and enthronement, and the judgement on Jerusalem that followed is exactly what Jesus described in the Olivet Discourse.
But the signs Jesus described are being fulfilled right now — wars, famines, earthquakes.
Jesus said "the end is not yet" (Matt 24:6) and warned His disciples not to be alarmed by those events. In He cautioned against anyone who says "the time is very near now." The wars, famines, and earthquakes He listed were fulfilled within that generation — Josephus documents them in detail. The Jewish revolt, the siege famine, the Pompeii earthquake of ~62 AD, the false messiahs Josephus names — all occurred before AD 70. And historically, every one of those calamities has dramatically decreased, not increased. Tertullian cited the same "signs" in 197 AD. Every generation thinks it is the last.
If Jesus came in AD 70, why does the world still have so much suffering?
The AD 70 coming was a judgement on Jerusalem — the end of the old covenant temple system — not the final judgement of all things. Christ reigns now () and will return bodily at the end (, 1 Thess 4:16–17). The three categories are the point: AD 70 judgement, present reign, future return. Collapsing them into a single event is exactly the mistake the Watchtower makes — and it forces them to invent an invisible 1914 presence to make it work.
Paul said the gospel had NOT been preached everywhere — there were still unreached people.
Paul himself wrote to the Colossians that the gospel 'has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven' (). He is making a statement of fulfilment — the same kind of universal language Jesus used in . 'All nations' in the first-century context meant the known world, the oikoumene, and Paul declares it accomplished. This does not mean every individual heard it — it means Jesus' condition in was met before AD 70.
Do not use Matthew 24 as your primary text for the future visible return — use Acts 1:9–11 instead. Do not claim the final judgement has already happened. Keep the three categories distinct: AD 70 judgement (past), present reign (now), future bodily return (still to come).
Read carefully. Notice that the Son of Man comes TO the Ancient of Days — He is going up, not coming down. Then read — 'the sign of the Son of Man appearing in heaven.' Compare with , where the disciples watch Jesus ascend and are told He will return 'in the same way' — visibly, bodily. These are different events. Then read Josephus, Wars of the Jews, Book 6, for his account of Jerusalem's destruction. Every element Jesus warned about — wars, famine, false prophets, the temple's destruction — Josephus documents as fulfilled within that generation.
