I Live Because of the Father

John 6:57 — incarnation context, not pre-existent origin
Deity of Christ Moderate
Doorstep Question
"Open your Bible to John 6 and read down to verse 57 with me. Jesus says "just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will live because of me." Two questions. What sent Jesus into the world the Father refers to in this verse — his origin, or his incarnation? And if "I live because of the Father" proves Jesus was created, what does "will live because of me" prove about the one who feeds on him? "
JW Claim

John 6:57 — "I live because of the Father" — proves Jesus owes his very
existence to Jehovah. He was created by the Father; therefore he is not
himself God. The text uses derivative-life language that fits a creature,
not the eternal God.

Strategy

The argument is context, parallelism, and consistency. Context: John 6 is the Bread of Life discourse. Jesus has just said "the living Father sent me" — and the sending is into the world (cf. , ). The "I live because of the Father" sits inside that sending-into-the-world frame, naming the incarnate life that derives its mission from the Father. Parallelism: the very next phrase is "so also the one who feeds on me will live because of me." If "I live because of the Father" proves Jesus is a creature dependent on the Father for origin, then by identical grammar "will live because of me" proves the believer is created by Jesus. The JW reading collapses: either the parallel describes derivative-mission-life on both sides (the right reading), or the verse makes Jesus the creator of the believer (which the JW won't accept). Consistency: — "as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself." The Son possesses self-existent life inherently. — "in him was life." Read inside the Bread of Life discourse and the consistent witness of John's Christology: the verse describes the incarnate Son's mission-derivative life, not the eternal Son's origin.

Key Insight

makes the believer live because of Jesus by the same grammar it makes Jesus live because of the Father. Pre-existence isn't in view — mission-life is.

Likely JW Response 1

But it says 'because of' the Father — that's origin language

Your Counter

"Because of" in Greek (dia + accusative) names cause or reason — mission, purpose, agency — not exclusively origin. The same preposition is used in ("alive to God in Christ Jesus"), ("we through him"), ("offered up for sins"). Context decides what kind of "because of" the verse means. The same verse's second half — "will live because of me" — uses the identical construction. If "because of the Father" means "originally created by," then "because of me" means the believer is originally created by Jesus. Either both halves describe mission-life, or both describe origin — and only one of those readings is consistent with the rest of John (1:4, 5:26).

Likely JW Response 2

Jesus was sent from heaven, but he was still created before that — the verse confirms his creation

Your Counter

The verse doesn't reach back behind the sending. frames the scope: "I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me." The sending is from heaven into the world. Everything in 's "I live because of the Father" sits inside that incarnate-mission frame. To extract a pre-creation ontology from a verse about the Bread of Life sent into the world is to read backwards what the text doesn't say.

Likely JW Response 3

Jesus is the firstborn of creation — John 6:57 confirms his derivative existence

Your Counter

That's an inference from read in isolation. Read together: he is the firstborn over creation, and by him all things were created, all things created through him and for him, and he is before all things. The "firstborn" Paul means is the one through whom and for whom all created things came to be — preeminence, not first-creature. doesn't establish derivative existence; it describes derivative mission.

What to Avoid

Don't make this verse the centrepiece of the deity case — it's a defensive response. Lead with Colossians 1:15-17 or John 1:1-3 and use John 6:57 only when the JW raises it.

Homework to Assign

Read with the second half included: "so also the one who feeds on me will live because of me." Ask the JW: by your reading of the first half, what does the second half make Jesus to the believer?
