Transformation Is Happening Now

2 Corinthians 3:18 — not deferred to the millennium
Sanctification Strong
Doorstep Question
" says 'we all... are being transformed into his image from one degree of glory to another.' Present tense — happening now. But the Watchtower teaches that real human transformation happens during the millennium. Which does Paul say is true? "
JW Claim

Jehovah's Witnesses are taught that genuine human perfection — freedom from sin's pull, full restoration of the image of God — is a millennial hope. During the 1,000-year reign of Christ, the "other sheep" will gradually be brought to perfection. The expectation of meaningful transformation now is not strongly encouraged — the focus is compliance, not inner renewal.

Strategy

The NT repeatedly describes transformation as a present-tense ongoing reality, not a deferred millennial event. This argument targets the JW's sense of spiritual possibility right now — not in 1,000 years.
Key present-tense transformation texts: - — "are being transformed" (present passive participle, ongoing) - — "if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come" (past tense completed reality) - — "put off the old self... be made new... put on the new self" - — "be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (present ongoing) - — "the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge" (ongoing)
The mechanism in every case is the Spirit — not organisational compliance.

  1. Read together.
  2. Ask: "When does Paul say this transformation is happening? Now, or in the millennium?"
  3. "And what is the mechanism? 'This comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.'"
  4. "Does your organisation teach that you're currently being transformed into Christ's image from glory to glory? Or does it focus on compliance with requirements?"
  5. The gentle challenge: "If this is available now — not in 1,000 years — what would it look like for you to access it?"
Key Insight

The NT presents transformation as an ongoing present-tense reality, powered by the Spirit, available now. The JW system defers the hope of genuine transformation to the millennium, leaving most members focused on compliance in the meantime.

Likely JW Response 1

We do grow spiritually — we grow in knowledge and obedience.

Your Counter

Growing in knowledge of Watchtower doctrine and growing in compliance with organisational requirements is different from what Paul describes: being transformed into Christ's own image, from glory to glory. Paul's metric is likeness to Christ — his character, his love, his freedom. Is that what your spiritual growth is measured by, or is it measured in meeting attendance and field service hours?

Likely JW Response 2

Humans need the millennium to become fully perfect — we're still imperfect now.

Your Counter

Paul doesn't say we'll be fully perfect now — he says we're being progressively transformed now. "From one degree of glory to another" implies a journey. says "the new creation has come" — already a reality. says "he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion." The work is happening now and will be completed. The question is whether you've experienced the beginning of it.

Likely JW Response 3

This passage is about the 144,000 anointed.

Your Counter

2 Corinthians is written to the whole Corinthian congregation, and Paul uses "we all" — pas — with no qualifier. "We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed." The "all" is the same "all" who are invited to the Lord's table in — every believer.

What to Avoid

Don't make this an attack on the millennium doctrine — that's a separate argument. Focus on the present-tense reality: transformation is available NOW, powered by the Spirit, for all believers.

Homework to Assign

Read with the paragraph before it until you can explain the verse from memory: 'we all', 'are being transformed', and the Lord who is the Spirit as its source. Then read , and , noting the present-tense language in each. Check the NWT wording of before you quote it. Practise asking aloud, 'When does Paul say this is happening, now or in the millennium?', and stay away from debating the millennium itself. Expect 'this passage is about the 144,000'; rehearse pointing to Paul's unqualified 'we all' in a letter to the whole congregation, with ready for the follow-up.
