# Zechariah 3:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of Jehovah, and Satan was standing at his right hand to resist him."

## JW Usage

JWs read this as a literal heavenly courtroom scene with Satan as the legal accuser of God's faithful servants — affirming Satan's reality and strategic activity. They sometimes use the scene to warn against association with anyone who criticises the organisation, framing such criticism as Satanic accusation.

## Protestant Usage

Zechariah 3:1 is decisive evidence that Satan in scripture is a localised creature, not a functional omnipresence. He stands at Joshua's right hand — in one place, in one posture, accusing one priest. The grammar treats Satan as a discrete person who occupies a specific spatial position before the angel of Jehovah. Pair this with Job 1:6-7 (Satan reports his itinerary on the earth) and 1 Peter 5:8 (Satan prowls like a lion) — the cumulative picture is a movable creature with limited reach. Once Satan is restored to creaturely scale, the JW reflex of attributing every doubt to Satan loses its theological footing.
