# Romans 8:9

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "However, you are in harmony, not with the flesh, but with the spirit, if God's spirit truly dwells in you. But if anyone does not have Christ's spirit, this person does not belong to him."

## JW Usage

The Watchtower teaches that the holy spirit indwells only the 144,000 anointed Christians. The "other sheep" — the vast majority of active Witnesses — do not have the Spirit dwelling in them personally; they relate to Jehovah through the organisation and through Christ as mediator only of the anointed. When Romans 8:9 is raised, JWs typically claim the Spirit still "works in" all Witnesses "just not in the same way as the anointed," introducing a third category Paul never describes.

## Protestant Usage

The NWT at Romans 8:9 reads: "if anyone does not have Christ's spirit, this person does not belong to him" (lowercase per the NWT's systemic pneumatology pattern). Paul draws a binary line with no middle ground — either the Spirit of Christ dwells in you, or you do not belong to Christ. There is no partial Spirit, associate Spirit, or organisational Spirit. The verse lands with particular force on the "other sheep" doctrine: by their own theology, the vast majority of Witnesses are locked in Romans 7 (law-based striving, ongoing defeat) but blocked from Romans 8's only solution — the indwelling Spirit who "gives life to your mortal bodies" (8:11) and bears personal witness that believers are God's children (8:15-16). The parallel phrase pneuma Christou also appears in Galatians 4:6 ("the Spirit of his Son") and Philippians 1:19 ("the Spirit of Jesus Christ") — always as a possessive genitive, the Spirit belonging to Christ. The doorstep question follows directly: does the Spirit personally dwell in you, or does your organisation teach that this is reserved for the 144,000? Paul's either/or is one of the most pastoral challenges available at the door. See romans7-8-trap and spirit-of-christ.

## NWT Issue

NWT lowercases "spirit" throughout Romans 8:9 — "God's spirit," "Christ's spirit" — consistent with the systemic depersonalising typography that runs through every NT Spirit reference (compare Acts 5:3-4, 13:2, 15:28). Particularly load-bearing here because Paul's either/or ("if anyone does not have Christ's spirit, this person does not belong to him") is the strongest NT statement of Spirit-indwelling as the mark of belonging to Christ. Lowercase typography supports the Watchtower's "active force" pneumatology against the Spirit's personhood, exactly where the argument needs the Spirit to be a person. The Greek *pneuma Christou* parallels *pneuma tou huiou autou* (Gal 4:6) and *pneuma Iēsou Christou* (Phil 1:19) — all lowercase in the NWT.
