Romans 8:31
Romans 8:3131What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Watchtower commentary takes ("If God is for us, who will be against us?") as encouragement for Witnesses to remain faithful through trials — Jehovah supports those loyal to him through his organisation. The verse is read as motivation for endurance rather than as the unconditional assurance that flows from completed justification.
is the rhetorical climax of the chapter. After vv28-30's golden chain — foreknew, predestined, called, justified, glorified — Paul asks: if this is what God has done for us, who is left to oppose us? The implied answer is no one. Vv32-34 then list the unsuccessful candidates: not God (he gave his Son); not Christ (he intercedes for us); not any creature (vv35-39). The verse is the doxological summit of Paul's argument for the believer's unbreakable security in Christ. The Watchtower's triple-jeopardy salvation system (Armageddon, millennium, post-millennial test) cannot accommodate v31. If even one of those tests can fail, "who is against us?" has a real answer.
