# Romans 8:31

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "What, then, are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who will be against us?"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes Romans 8:31 ("If God is for us, who will be against us?") as encouragement for Witnesses to remain faithful through trials — Jehovah supports those loyal to him through his organisation. The verse is read as motivation for endurance rather than as the unconditional assurance that flows from completed justification.

## Protestant Usage

Romans 8:31 is the rhetorical climax of the chapter. After vv28-30's golden chain — foreknew, predestined, called, justified, glorified — Paul asks: if this is what God has done for us, who is left to oppose us? The implied answer is no one. Vv32-34 then list the unsuccessful candidates: not God (he gave his Son); not Christ (he intercedes for us); not any creature (vv35-39). The verse is the doxological summit of Paul's argument for the believer's unbreakable security in Christ. The Watchtower's triple-jeopardy salvation system (Armageddon, millennium, post-millennial test) cannot accommodate v31. If even one of those tests can fail, "who is against us?" has a real answer.
