# Romans 8:29

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "those whom he gave his first recognition he also foreordained to be patterned after the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes Romans 8:29 as describing Jehovah's "first recognition" of those who would respond to the gospel and his predetermination that they be conformed to Christ's image. The "first recognition" rendering accommodates the JW position that God's foreknowledge is not exhaustive — Jehovah recognises certain qualities or responses in advance rather than knowing every individual exhaustively from eternity.

## Protestant Usage

The Greek verb is proegnō — literally "knew before" or "foreknew." Paul names the first link in the golden chain: "those whom he foreknew, he also foreordained… called… justified… glorified." The chain holds because the foreknowing is exhaustive, personal, and effective — God's prior knowledge of his elect that grounds their predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. The NWT's "first recognition" weakens this to a perceptive notice rather than a covenantal knowing — but the chain cannot survive the dilution. If God merely "first recognised" certain qualities, the chain becomes conditional on those qualities holding; if he foreknew individuals, the chain is settled in him. Paul's whole Romans 8 argument — "nothing can separate us" — requires the stronger reading.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders proegnō as "gave his first recognition" — a unique gloss not found in any standard English Bible (ESV/NASB/NIV/KJV all read "foreknew"). The expansion reframes the Greek verb of prior knowing into one of prior acknowledging, which fits the Watchtower's position against exhaustive divine foreknowledge of individuals. But the chain in vv29-30 collapses if foreknowing is weakened: the linked acts of predestination, calling, justification, and glorification depend on the unconditioned foreknowledge that begins them.
