# Romans 8:26

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "the spirit also joins in with help for our weakness; for the problem is that we do not know what we should pray for as we need to, but the spirit itself pleads for us with unuttered groanings"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes Romans 8:26 as describing Jehovah's spirit helping believers in their weakness — but reads "the spirit itself pleads" as figurative language for God's power working in believers, not as a personal intercession by a divine person. The lowercase "spirit" reflects the active-force doctrine; "itself" rather than "himself" preserves the impersonal reading.

## Protestant Usage

Even in the NWT's own translation, the Spirit performs three irreducibly personal actions in this verse. First, he "joins in with help" — helping requires awareness of a need. Second, he "pleads for us" — pleading is inherently personal and presupposes will, intent, and emotion. Electricity does not plead. Third, v27 says God "searches the hearts" and knows the "meaning of the spirit" — phronēma, the same word for the believer's mindset in v6. The Spirit has a mindset that the Father searches. Forces do not have mindsets. And in John 16:13, Jesus uses the masculine pronoun ekeinos for the Spirit, breaking grammatical convention to signal personhood. The NWT renders "spirit itself" — but the actions Paul describes refuse the impersonal reading.

## NWT Issue

Two NWT renderings load the doctrine. First, lowercase "spirit" — consensus capitalises. Second, "the spirit itself" rather than "the Spirit himself" (ESV/NASB/NIV) — even where Greek pneuma is grammatically neuter, John 16:13's masculine ekeinos shows the NT shifts to personal pronouns when needed; the NWT's "itself" preserves the impersonal reading the Greek does not require. Third, "pleads" for entynchanei is softer than the consensus "intercedes" (ESV/NASB/KJV); the same softening recurs at v34 of Christ's intercession.
