JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes as describing the liberation Christ's ransom makes possible — freedom from the condemnation Adam's sin produced. The "law of the spirit that gives life" is read as the principle of life through Christ, available to those who associate with Jehovah's organisation. The lowercase "spirit" reflects the active-force doctrine that denies the Holy Spirit's personhood.

Protestant Usage

is the answer to 's cry. The Spirit's law of life — the indwelling, person-of-the- Trinity Holy Spirit — has set the believer free. "In Christ Jesus" means union with Christ: every believer mystically united with Christ in his death and resurrection (compare ). The Watchtower's two-tier system blocks both halves of the verse: it denies that the great crowd has the indwelling Spirit, and it dilutes union with Christ into mere organisational alignment. Paul makes this verse the charter of every Christian's freedom — not the privilege of 144,000.

NWT Issue

The NWT lowercases "spirit" — consensus capitalises (ESV/ NASB/NIV "Spirit"). The lowercase reflects the Watchtower's doctrine that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal active force rather than a divine person — but this verse names "the law of the spirit that gives life," and a force does not legislate or give life. The grammar resists the doctrine. Also "in union with" expands the Greek en — the consensus rendering "in Christ Jesus" preserves Paul's compact union formula.
