# Romans 8:15

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

## JW Usage

JWs restrict the "spirit of adoption" to the 144,000 anointed class. Only the anointed receive the witness of the Spirit that they are God's children; the "great crowd" are described as God's friends, not his adopted sons and daughters. The cry "Abba! Father!" is an intimate privilege reserved for the heavenly class, not available to the millions of Witnesses with an earthly hope.

## Protestant Usage

Romans 8:15-16 describes the most intimate experience of the Christian life: receiving the "spirit of adoption" and crying "Abba! Father!" — a deeply personal, relational testimony of belonging to God. Paul contrasts this with a "spirit of slavery causing fear" (v. 15a). The JW system creates the theological trap Romans 7-8 diagnoses: it produces Romans 7 conditions (law-based striving, performance anxiety, fear of falling short) while blocking the Romans 8 solution (indwelling Spirit, assurance of sonship). Romans 8:9 draws the line with no third category: "if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." Paul writes this to the entire Roman congregation, not to an anointed subset. If the Spirit of adoption is restricted to 144,000, then the rest do not belong to Christ — a conclusion the Watchtower cannot accept but cannot avoid.
