# Romans 8:11

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "If, now, the spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through his spirit that resides in you."

## JW Usage

JWs teach that Jehovah alone raised Jesus from the dead using holy spirit as an impersonal active force. Romans 8:11 is read as confirming that Jehovah's spirit — not a personal Holy Spirit — was the power by which the resurrection was accomplished. The verse is also cited to support the belief that faithful Christians will receive resurrection through the same impersonal force, not through the indwelling of a divine person.

## Protestant Usage

Romans 8:11 is the third link in a compact trinitarian proof built entirely from the NWT itself. The New Testament attributes the single historical event of Jesus' resurrection to the Father (Acts 2:24), to Jesus himself (John 2:19, 10:17-18), and to the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11). One event, three agents — a pattern only trinitarian theology explains without contradiction. Romans 8:11 also says the Spirit "dwells in you" — impersonal forces do not "dwell." The same Spirit who raised Jesus is personally present in every believer, guaranteeing their future bodily resurrection. The Watchtower's restriction of Spirit-indwelling to the 144,000 collides directly with this verse: Paul writes to the entire Roman congregation, not to an anointed elite. If "anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ" (Romans 8:9) — there is no third category.

## NWT Issue

NWT renders "the spirit of him who raised up Jesus" and "his spirit that resides in you" — lowercase throughout, consistent with the systemic depersonalising typography that runs through every NT Spirit reference (compare Acts 5:3-4, 13:2, 15:28). Romans 8:11 is the third agent in the trinitarian-resurrection proof the protestant_usage develops, and the lowercase rendering makes it easier to read the Spirit as an impersonal active force rather than as the personal agent Paul says "dwells in" believers. Impersonal forces do not dwell; the verb *enoikei* ("dwells") requires a personal subject. The verb survives translation, so the argument lands — but the typography consistently pulls against personhood.
