Romans 6:3
3Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

JW Usage

JWs accept that baptism unites the candidate with Christ's death symbolically — a public declaration of personal dedication to Jehovah. From 1985 onward, the second baptism question further identifies the candidate as one of Jehovah's Witnesses "in association with God's spirit-directed organisation" (revised in 2019 to "in association with Jehovah's organisation"), making the vow a dual identification: with Jehovah AND with the organisational arrangement.

Protestant Usage

Paul's preposition is load-bearing: baptised INTO Christ Jesus, baptised INTO his death. The candidate is being united with a person, not enrolled in a corporation. The NWT itself reads "baptised into Christ Jesus" — even on the JW translation, the union is with Christ. says the same: "as many as were baptised into Christ have put on Christ". — Peter's Pentecost sermon — commands baptism "in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins". — the Ethiopian eunuch — has one baptism question, about faith in Christ. None of the apostolic baptism texts name an organisation, and the NWT does not insert one. The 1985 second question added a vow the apostles never required, and that vow is the lever the shunning system uses.
