NT Letters
Romans 5:8
8But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes as the central proof-text for Christ's ransom — God demonstrated his love by sending Jesus to die "while we were yet sinners." The ransom is the corresponding-equivalent perfect-human sacrifice that opens the way to eternal life for those who meet Jehovah's requirements through the organisation.

Protestant Usage

This verse is the heart of the gospel and the heart of "It is finished." God demonstrates his love precisely by acting for sinners — not for the cooperative, not for the organisationally compliant, but for those still in their sin. Pair this with : "Much more, then, since we have NOW been declared righteous by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath." Paul's a fortiori logic is decisive: if God has already done the harder thing (declaring sinners righteous), the easier thing (saving us from final wrath) is secured. There is no second works-dependent stage. The cross is full payment, not a discount applied at the start of a ledger.

NWT Issue

The NWT renders synistēsin as "recommends" — consensus reads "shows" or "demonstrates" (ESV/NIV/NASB) and "commendeth" (KJV). "Recommends" flattens Paul's verb of active proof into something closer to "puts forward as a candidate." The Greek has the sense of God establishing or proving his love by the cross; "recommends" misses the demonstrative force.
