Romans 3:27
Romans 3:2727Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith.
Watchtower commentary takes as warning against pride in one's own works of the law — Christians have nothing to boast about because salvation depends on Jehovah's undeserved kindness through the ransom. But the JW system still requires demonstrated obedience for the ransom to be applied to a person's individual sins. Boasting in works is out; demonstrating works is in.
closes Paul's gospel exposition with a hammer: "Where, then, is the boasting? There is no place for it… through the law of faith." If salvation included even a cooperative human contribution, boasting would be valid: "I contributed my obedience." Paul says it does not — the cross excludes ALL human contribution by design. The reason the gospel produces no boasting is precisely that justification is from beginning to end God's work in Christ, received by faith. The Watchtower's "ransom opens the door, works walk through it" reintroduces the basis of boasting — and v27 decisively excludes it. If boasting is excluded, works cannot be the basis of standing. They are the fruit, not the root.
