Romans 3:22
Romans 3:2222And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,
Watchtower commentary takes as describing how righteousness is received — through faith in Jesus Christ. But the JW system pairs this faith with ongoing organisational loyalty: faith opens the door, and works walk through it. "There is no distinction" is read as opening salvation to every nation, not as removing the distinction between the redeemer and the redeemed.
is the centre of Paul's gospel. "God's righteousness through the faith in Jesus Christ, for all those having faith. For there is no distinction." Two decisive claims. First, the righteousness BELONGS TO GOD — it is not produced by the believer; it is given. Second, it is received THROUGH FAITH — not through faith plus works, not through faith plus organisational membership, but through faith alone. And "there is no distinction" closes both the ethnic question (Jew/Greek) and the moral question (perfect doer / sinner) — every believer receives the same imputed righteousness. The Watchtower's "ransom plus loyalty" scheme reinserts the distinction Paul has just abolished.
The NWT renders the Greek pisteōs Iēsou Christou with an inserted definite article: "the faith in Jesus Christ." Standard versions read "faith in Jesus Christ" without the article (ESV/NASB/NIV/KJV). The added "the" leans interpretively into the objective-genitive reading (the believer's act of trusting in Jesus) rather than the contested subjective-genitive reading (the faithfulness of Jesus himself). The choice is consistent with the Watchtower's emphasis on the believer's act over Christ's work, but it is a translator's interpretive overlay rather than a clear feature of the Greek.
