# Romans 14:10

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why do you belittle your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

## JW Usage

JWs cite Romans 14:10-12 as evidence that every person must give an account to God, reinforcing the expectation that salvation depends on a lifetime of faithful obedience. The "judgment seat of God" is read as a future evaluation where one's entire record — meeting attendance, field service, loyalty to the organisation — determines the outcome. The verse also supports the prohibition on judging birthday celebrations or other practices the organisation has decided are wrong.

## Protestant Usage

Romans 14:10-12 describes believers giving account at the judgment seat, but the broader context of Romans makes clear that these are people already justified (Romans 5:1, "since we have been declared righteous"), already free from condemnation (Romans 8:1, "no condemnation for those in union with Christ"), and already secure (Romans 8:33-34, "who will file accusation? who is to condemn?"). The judgment is an evaluation of how believers lived, not a re-opening of the verdict on their standing with God. Matthew 25 confirms the pattern: the sheep are declared "blessed by my Father" before their works are recited, and the sheep are surprised by their own works ("Lord, when did we see you hungry?"). Works flow unconsciously from a transformed nature; the judgment reveals the verdict God already rendered in Christ, using works as public evidence. Believers do not build a portfolio to earn entrance — they are declared righteous and their lives bear witness to what grace has done.
