# Romans 12:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, a sacred service with your power of reason"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes Romans 12:1 as describing the spiritual obligation of every Witness — to present one's body as a living sacrifice through obedient participation in Jehovah's organisation. The "sacred service" rendering is consistent with the Watchtower's distinction between worship (proskuneō, reserved exclusively for Jehovah) and sacred service (latreia, performed by the JW community in preaching, meeting, and ministry).

## Protestant Usage

This verse is a key node in the universal priesthood. Every believer offers spiritual sacrifices — the one priestly act Paul commands of all (compare 1 Peter 2:5, Hebrews 13:15). The Greek logikēn latreian — "rational worship" or "spiritual worship" — is what the believer's whole life becomes when offered to God. The Watchtower's "sacred service" rendering systematically routes latreia/latreuō away from "worship" — allowing it to translate Revelation 22:3 ("his slaves render him sacred service") in a way that obscures the joint worship of God and the Lamb on the shared throne. And restricting priesthood to the 144,000 contradicts Paul's address to every Roman believer here: "present YOUR bodies as a living sacrifice." Universal priesthood begins at the doorstep of Romans 12:1.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders latreia as "sacred service" — consensus reads "spiritual worship" (ESV/NASB), "true and proper worship" (NIV), or "reasonable service" (KJV). The systematic NWT preference is to route latreia/latreuō into "sacred service" rather than "worship," reserving "worship" for proskuneō. The split is theologically motivated: it allows the Watchtower to translate Revelation 22:3 ("his slaves will render him sacred service") in a way that obscures the joint worship of God and the Lamb on the shared throne. The Greek latreuō is the Septuagint worship-verb for service rendered exclusively to God (Deuteronomy 6:13; Matthew 4:10).
