# Romans 1:18

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses rarely dwell on Romans 1:18 in isolation, but the verse functions as background for the Watchtower's works-based soteriology. When Paul writes that 'the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,' the organisation reads this as a warning that only continuous obedience — preaching, meeting attendance, loyalty to the organisation — can keep a person safe from that wrath. In argument 154 the JW claim draws on Romans 2:6-13 to assert that God 'will repay each one according to his deeds,' treating the entire section from 1:18 onward as proof that salvation is earned through perseverance in doing good. Romans 1:18 thus sets the stage for the JW reading in which human effort is what stands between a person and divine wrath.

## Protestant Usage

Romans 1:18 opens Paul's prosecutorial argument that runs through to Romans 3:20. The strategy in argument 154 shows Paul's flow: Romans 1:18-32 indicts the Gentiles, Romans 2:1-29 indicts the Jews, and Romans 3:1-20 delivers the universal verdict — no one is righteous. The key insight is that Paul is building a case, not offering an escape route through human effort. God's wrath in 1:18 is revealed against ALL ungodliness and unrighteousness, establishing the universal problem that no amount of law-keeping can solve. This is precisely why Paul must introduce 'a righteousness of God apart from the law' in Romans 3:21. The verse is the foundation of the entire justification-by-faith argument: without recognising the totality of the problem Paul sets up here, the JW reader never feels the weight of the solution Paul offers in chapters 3-5.
