# Revelation 7:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And I heard the number of those who were sealed, 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel:

## JW Usage

JWs take 144,000 as a literal number: exactly 144,000 anointed Christians will rule with Christ in heaven. However, the gender (male), virginity (virgin), and tribal ethnicity (twelve tribes of Israel) listed in Revelation 14:1-4 and 7:4-8 are all interpreted symbolically. The number itself is the only element treated as literal. This forms the foundation of the two-class system: 144,000 in heaven, a "great crowd" on a paradise earth.

## Protestant Usage

The selective literalism is the decisive issue. If gender (male virgins, Revelation 14:4), tribal identity (twelve specific tribes), and tribal numbers (12,000 from each) are all symbolic, on what textual basis is the number 144,000 literal? The text forces a choice: either everything is literal — in which case no JW qualifies, since the 144,000 must be male Jewish virgins from named tribes — or everything is symbolic, and the two-class system collapses. The "heard/saw" literary pattern strengthens the case: in Revelation 5:5-6, John hears "Lion of Judah" then sees "a Lamb" — the same person described two ways. In 7:4-9, John hears "144,000" then sees "a great multitude" — the identical literary structure suggests the same group described two ways, not two separate classes. The tribal list itself is non-historical: Dan is missing, Levi is included as a land tribe, and Manasseh is separated from Joseph. The number 12 x 12 x 1,000 is a symbolic formula of completeness, not a census.
