JW Usage

JWs identify the "great crowd" of as an earthly class distinct from the 144,000 heavenly anointed. This verse — describing the great crowd serving God "in his temple" — is reinterpreted to refer to the earthly courtyard of a symbolic temple arrangement, since JW theology requires the great crowd to remain on earth. The Watchtower distinguishes between the inner sanctuary (naos) and the outer temple precinct, assigning the great crowd to the latter.

Protestant Usage

The Greek word used here is naos — the inner sanctuary, not hieron (the broader temple complex). In Revelation, naos consistently refers to God's heavenly dwelling: the temple in heaven opens (, 15:5), God's throne is in the naos (), and angels come out of it (, 15:6). There is no instance of naos in Revelation referring to an earthly location. The great crowd serves God "day and night in his naos" — the same heavenly inner sanctuary where God dwells. This undermines the two-class distinction: if the great crowd is in the naos, they are in heaven. in the NWT itself places "a great crowd in heaven." Combined with ("one flock, one shepherd") and ("one hope"), the text supports a single destiny for all believers, not a two-tier system.
