# Revelation 6:9

> And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower reads the "souls under the altar" in Revelation 6:9 as symbolic of unavenged injustice — Genesis 4:10 is the pattern where Abel's blood "cries out" from the ground as a metaphor for murder demanding judgment. The souls are not conscious persons; they are the metaphorical voice of martyrdom awaiting vindication at Armageddon. The white robes and the instruction to "wait a little longer" are treated as symbolic stage directions, not literal actions performed on or by conscious souls.

## Protestant Usage

Symbols carry meaning, and the symbols in Revelation 6:9-11 require conscious souls to make sense. The souls cry out with SPECIFIC WORDS ("How long, Sovereign Lord?"). They are GIVEN WHITE ROBES — you cannot clothe non-existence. They are TOLD to "rest a little longer" — you cannot instruct a figure of speech to wait. The Abel parallel backfires: Abel's blood "crying" is a single metaphorical verb; these souls speak, receive clothing, and receive instructions — five distinct actions performed on or by these souls. At the door: "If John wanted to symbolise non-existent souls awaiting resurrection, he could have done it. Instead he depicts them speaking, being clothed, and being told to wait. Every NT author who describes death describes the dead as conscious — Luke 16, Luke 23:43, Philippians 1:23, 2 Corinthians 5:8, 1 Peter 3:19. Revelation 6:9 fits the same pattern."
