# Revelation 5:8

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb, and each one had a harp and golden bowls that were full of incense"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary reads Revelation 5:8 as describing the honour given to the Lamb at his enthronement — the four living creatures and 24 elders prostrate themselves before Jesus as Jehovah's appointed king. The "falling down" is treated as obeisance rather than worship, appropriate to the Lamb's exalted-but-not-divine status. The incense and prayers represent the worship of God's people ascending to him through Jesus.

## Protestant Usage

Notice the action. The same beings who in 4:10 "fall down before the One seated on the throne" now fall down before the Lamb — same posture, same heavenly setting, same worshippers. Then in v14 those same beings will "fall down and worship" the Lamb (the NWT itself uses "worshipped" there). The progression is unmistakable: 4:10 worship of the Father; 5:8 prostration before the Lamb; 5:14 explicit worship of God and the Lamb jointly. Either every heavenly creature commits idolatry without correction in God's own throne room, or the Lamb shares the Father's worship-receiving identity.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders the predicative "are" (eisin) as "mean" in the parenthetical "(the incense means the prayers of the holy ones)." Consensus reads "are the prayers" (ESV/NASB/NIV/KJV). Same is-to-means pattern documented at Rev 5:6, 17:9, 17:18, 20:14. The shift weakens identification language toward mere symbolic equivalence — a recurring stylistic preference that softens the text's force whenever apocalyptic symbols are equated with their referents.
