# Revelation 5:6

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "I saw standing in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures and in the midst of the elders a lamb that seemed to have been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, and the eyes mean the seven spirits of God"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes Revelation 5:6 as the central Christological scene where the Lamb — Jesus Christ — appears in the heavenly throne room. The seven horns symbolise complete authority; the seven eyes / seven spirits symbolise complete knowledge or insight. The Lamb's position "in the midst of the throne" is taken as Jesus's role as the agent through whom Jehovah exercises his rule.

## Protestant Usage

This verse opens the heard/saw pattern that runs through Revelation. In v5 John HEARS about the Lion of the tribe of Judah; in v6 he LOOKS and SEES a Lamb. The Lion and the Lamb are the same person — Jesus — described two ways. The same heard/saw literary structure appears in 7:4-9: heard 144,000 from the twelve tribes (v4), saw the great crowd (v9) — same group, described two ways. If the Lion equals the Lamb, the 144,000 equals the great crowd. The Watchtower's two-class system breaks on this internal Revelation pattern.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders the predicative "are" (eisin) as "mean" — "the eyes mean the seven spirits." Consensus reads "the eyes are the seven spirits" (ESV/NASB/NIV/KJV). The is-to-means shift, recurring at Rev 17:9, 17:18, 20:14 and again at Rev 5:8, weakens identification statements into mere symbolic equivalence — useful for the Watchtower's selective-literalism reading of Revelation's symbols. Lowercase "spirits" continues the active-force pattern.
