# Revelation 4:2

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> At once I was in the Spirit, and I saw a throne standing in heaven, with someone seated on it.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "After this I immediately came to be in the power of the spirit, and look! a throne was in its position in heaven"

## JW Usage

Watchtower commentary takes Revelation 4:2 as the opening of John's vision of Jehovah's heavenly throne. The throne and the One seated on it are Jehovah; the surrounding scene establishes the heavenly setting from which all subsequent prophecy unfolds. The verse fits the broader Watchtower picture of Jehovah ruling from heaven over a paradise earth populated by the great crowd.

## Protestant Usage

The throne is in heaven, and "someone was seated on the throne." Use this verse to anchor what "before the throne" means whenever it appears in Revelation. The 24 elders fall down before this throne (4:10); the angels stand around it (5:11); the great crowd stands before it (7:9, 7:15). All of these are heavenly scenes — the throne is in heaven (4:2), so any group described as standing before it is also in heaven. The Watchtower's earthly-class reading of the great crowd cannot survive consistent application of the throne-location this verse establishes.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders en pneumati as "in the power of the spirit" — an expansion of the Greek phrase that consensus translations leave as "in the Spirit" (ESV/NASB/NIV/KJV). The added "power of" interprets the Greek as a circumstantial passive rather than a prophetic-rapture state. Lowercase "spirit" reflects the Watchtower's "active force" doctrine that denies the Holy Spirit's personhood.
