Take this verse as the anchor rather than , where the title appears only in later manuscripts. Here it is on solid textual ground, and it is in their Bible. The title itself is drawn from Isaiah: "I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no God" (44:6), and . It is an exclusive divine self-designation. Now follow it through Revelation. At 1:17 the speaker says "I am the First and the Last" — and identifies himself two lines later as the one who became dead and is living for ever, which can only be Jesus. At 22:13 the full title returns: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. And at 22:12 and 22:16 the speaker says he is coming quickly with his reward, and names himself as the root and offspring of David. So the same exclusive title is used of the one on the throne here and of the risen Christ there. Ask a Witness to read , 21:6 and 22:12-16 in order and say who is speaking in each. Compare , , .
