Revelation 18:11

NT Prophecy
Revelation 18:11
11And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because there is no one left to buy their cargo—

Watchtower commentary reads as a symbolic description of the lament of those who profited from Christendom — politicians, business interests, and cultural elites who benefited from her religious influence. The "merchants" are not literal traders but those whose privileges end when false religion is destroyed at Armageddon.

Protestant Usage

Read v11-13 as commerce, not theology. The merchants weep because "there is no one to buy their full cargo anymore." The cargo list in v12-13 is the inventory of an imperial trading capital: gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, silk, scented wood, ivory, marble, spice, wine, cattle, horses, chariots — and slaves, "bodies and souls of men." This is the language of economic loss, not liturgical scandal. If Babylon were "false religion," the merchants would be priests; the weepers would be the deceived faithful. Instead they are traders, and their loss is commercial. The grief at the destruction of Babylon is the grief of an empire's traders, not of a religion's adherents.
