Revelation 14:11
Revelation 14:1111And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
Watchtower commentary reads as describing permanent annihilation, not eternal conscious torment. The "smoke that ascends forever" is taken as evidence of complete destruction (smoke from a fire that has burned out as the permanent memorial of what the fire consumed); the worshippers of the beast cease to exist. "No rest day or night" is read as describing their condition in the present life, not in eternity. The Watchtower's Reasoning From the Scriptures denies that any human will be tormented forever.
Read the verse without the annihilationist framework. The smoke of their torment (basanismos — conscious affliction, not destruction) ascends forever and ever — the standard apocalyptic intensifier for eternal duration. "They have no rest day or night" describes the worshippers themselves, not bystanders watching the smoke. closes the question: the devil, the beast, and the false prophet "will be tormented day and night forever and ever" — same phrase, with explicit "tormented." says death itself is thrown into the lake of fire; death cannot be annihilated, so the lake of fire means more than mere destruction. Jesus's warnings about hell are real and ongoing. Treat them as urgent pastoral care, not as theological ammunition.
