# Psalms 79:9

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; deliver us and atone for our sins, for the sake of Your name.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Help us, O God of our salvation, For the sake of your glorious name; Rescue us and forgive our sins for the sake of your name."

## JW Usage

Used for the theme of Jehovah acting for the sake of his own name — the sanctification of the divine name being, in Watchtower teaching, the resolution of the great issue raised in Eden. Forgiveness is granted because Jehovah's reputation is at stake.

## Protestant Usage

Both halves of the verse hang on the same thing. Help us for the sake of your glorious name; rescue us and forgive our sins for the sake of your name. Salvation and forgiveness, and the ground of each is the name. That is the first half of a pattern worth building slowly. Psalm 25:11 asks pardon for the sake of the name. Psalm 54:1 asks for salvation by the name. Joel 2:32 promises that everyone calling on the name of Jehovah will be saved. Isaiah 43:11 says besides me there is no saviour. The second half is what the apostles do with all of it. Acts 2:21 quotes Joel's promise and Peter applies it in a sermon about Jesus. Romans 10:13 quotes the same line and applies it to Christ, having just said in verse 9 that confessing Jesus as Lord is how one is saved. The apostles took the Old Testament's exclusive saving formula and attached it to Jesus. Either that was blasphemy, or the two names belong to one God. Compare Psalms 25:11, Romans 10:11, Luke 24:47.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [The Salvation-Name Dilemma](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/salvation-name-dilemma.md) — Old Testament — only Jehovah's name saves. New Testament — only Jesus' name saves. [Deity of Christ]
