JW Usage

Cited for the importance of Jehovah's name and for his willingness to forgive. The Watchtower emphasises that pardon is granted for the sake of the divine name, which fits its teaching that vindicating that name is the central issue in the universe.

Protestant Usage

Notice the ground of the request. David does not ask for forgiveness because his error is small — he says it is great. He asks for the sake of Jehovah's name. That is the Old Testament pattern, and it is worth collecting. : rescue us and forgive our sins for the sake of your name. : save me by your name. : I am the one who wipes out your transgressions for my own sake. Forgiveness is repeatedly grounded in the divine name and in nothing else. Now the second stack. : repentance for forgiveness of sins proclaimed on the basis of his name — Jesus'. : everyone believing in him receives forgiveness through his name. : no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. Build both stacks before drawing any conclusion, and let the Witness see the shape. Then ask: in the Hebrew Scriptures, could pardon be asked for in any name but Jehovah's? Compare , , .
