is one of the central JW proof-texts for Jesus as Michael the Archangel — Jehovah's "master worker" — through whom Jehovah created "all other things." Wisdom in Proverbs 8 is read as a literal pre-incarnate Jesus, present at creation as Jehovah's first creature and active agent. The "master worker" rendering supports the Arian Christology in which Jesus is a created being who served as Jehovah's instrument in subsequent creation. Pair with the NWT's insertion of "[other]" at to complete the framework.

Protestant Usage

Proverbs 8 is widely recognised in Hebrew scholarship as a poetic personification of wisdom — a literary device, not a literal pre-incarnate Christology. Read the chapter as a whole: Wisdom speaks in the first person throughout, is feminine, was "brought forth" before the world (vv. 22-25), played and rejoiced (vv. 30-31). If Proverbs 8 is taken as a literal description of pre-incarnate Jesus, then Jesus is feminine, was brought forth (not begotten), and was playing rather than ruling. The literal reading collapses on its own terms. Pair with ("Jehovah created alone, by myself") and (the Father addresses the Son as the one who "laid the foundations of the earth"). If Jehovah created alone, the Son cannot be a separate creature acting as instrument; he must be included in who Jehovah is. The "master worker" reading is technically in bounds lexically but doctrinally weighted by JW Christology in a way the text does not require.
