JW Usage

receives no specific JW apologetic engagement. The verse functions devotionally — Witnesses are warned against walking in the path of the wicked. The companion verse ("the path of the righteous is like the bright morning light") is, by contrast, foundational to the Watchtower's "new light" doctrine: doctrinal changes are progressive illumination, not error correction.

Protestant Usage

is the immediate counter-context for the "new light" doctrine drawn from v. 18. Read vv. 14-19 as a single unit: the contrast is between the moral path of the righteous individual (becoming brighter and clearer over time) and the moral path of the wicked (deeper darkness). The passage is about personal moral trajectory, not about the organisational correction of false predictions. Pair with (the false-prophet test) and the Watchtower's failed-date catalogue: 1874, 1914, 1925, the Beth Sarim mansion built in 1929 for the patriarchs whose resurrection in 1925 had already failed, then 1975, then the shifting "this generation" definitions. None of these are "increasing brightness" — they are reversals of specific predictions made in Jehovah's name. governs the reading of v. 18: the bright path is not a doctrinal course-correction mechanism for failed prophecy.
