# Proverbs 14:12

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "There is a way that seems right to a man, But in the end it leads to death."

## JW Usage

Proverbs 14:12 receives no specific JW apologetic engagement. The verse functions devotionally — Witnesses are warned that human reasoning can lead to destruction without Jehovah's guidance. The implicit application is that the Watchtower's teaching is the safe path, while independent biblical reasoning leads to the apostasy of "Christendom."

## Protestant Usage

Proverbs 14:12 cuts in the opposite direction. The verse warns that subjective certainty about religious truth — "the way that seems right to a man" — can lead to destruction. Every sincere religious adherent across every tradition feels their path is right: the Mormon, the Muslim, the Hindu, the Witness, the Catholic, the Protestant. Sincerity alone cannot adjudicate between contradictory claims. Pair Proverbs 14:12 with Jeremiah 17:9 ("the heart is more deceitful than anything else"), 1 John 4:1 ("test the inspired statements to see whether they originate with God"), and Acts 17:11 (the Bereans tested even apostolic teaching against Scripture). Subjective certainty about Watchtower teaching cannot validate Watchtower teaching — only Scripture, examined and verified, can do that.
