# Philippians 1:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> because I know that through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, my distress will turn out for my deliverance.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "for I know that this will result in my salvation through your supplication and with the support of the spirit of Jesus Christ."

## JW Usage

The Watchtower reads "the spirit of Jesus Christ" as Jesus's teachings, example, or his shared use of Jehovah's active force — not as a personal Spirit who is Christ's own. JW theology denies the personhood of the Holy Spirit and denies that Christ has or sends a Spirit of his own apart from being a vehicle of Jehovah's power. The phrase is typically muted or paraphrased to avoid the Christological implication that the Son shares the divine prerogative of sending the Spirit.

## Protestant Usage

"The spirit of Jesus Christ" is Trinitarian language. Pair Philippians 1:19 with 1 Peter 1:11 (the Spirit of Christ in the Old Testament prophets), Romans 8:9 (you have "the Spirit of Christ"), Galatians 4:6 (God has sent forth "the Spirit of his Son into our hearts"), and Acts 16:7 (the "Spirit of Jesus" prevented Paul from going). Five passages identify the Spirit as Christ's own — a relationship of shared divine identity that the JW unitarian framework cannot bear. If Christ is a created being, what is the Spirit "of"? The Father's Spirit alone? But the New Testament names the same Spirit as the Father's Spirit AND the Son's Spirit — which presupposes the Son's full divinity.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders pneuma Iēsou Christou as "the spirit of Jesus Christ" — lower-case, no capital. The systematic NWT depersonalisation of pneuma applies here as it does at Matthew 3:16, John 14:26, Acts 5:3, and elsewhere. Standard English translations capitalise "Spirit" because the Greek personal- noun usage and surrounding theology identify the Spirit as the third person of the Trinity who proceeds from the Father and the Son. The lower-casing here is doctrinally weighty because Philippians 1:19 directly identifies the Spirit as belonging to Jesus Christ — a relationship the JW framework cannot allow if Jesus is merely a created being.
