# Numbers 11:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Then the LORD said to Moses, “Bring Me seventy of the elders of Israel known to you as leaders and officers of the people. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting and have them stand there with you.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Jehovah replied to Moses: 'Gather for me 70 men from the elders of Israel, men whom you recognize as elders and officials of the people, and take them to the tent of meeting, and have them stand there with you.'"

## JW Usage

The Watchtower invokes Numbers 11:16 as Old Testament precedent for the Governing Body's authority structure. Moses's seventy elders are read as a typological pattern: God uses a leader with a council of elders to direct his people. The modern Governing Body is presented as the new-covenant equivalent — a small body of brothers receiving direction from Jehovah and passing it to the rank-and-file Witnesses globally.

## Protestant Usage

The seventy elders of Numbers 11 were assistants who shared "the spirit that was on Moses" for the specific task of helping judge the people. They were not Moses's successors. When Moses died, no council of seventy ruled in his place — Joshua did, and Joshua was specifically commissioned by God (Numbers 27:18, Deuteronomy 31:14). Pair Numbers 11:16 with Hebrews 3:1-6 (Christ is the new-covenant "Moses," faithful over all God's house) and Acts 14:23 (Paul appointed elders "in each congregation" — plural, local, not a centralised council). The New Testament's leadership pattern is plural local elders, mutually accountable, with Christ as the chief shepherd. Eight men in one city governing 8 million Witnesses worldwide has no New Testament analogue and no plausible Numbers 11 parallel.
