# Matthew 7:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Every tree not producing fine fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

## JW Usage

Matthew 7:19 is read by JW publications as a warning about the fate of those who fail to produce fruit — the unrepentant apostate, the wicked person, those outside Jehovah's organisation at Armageddon. The verse functions devotionally to motivate Witnesses toward visible "fine fruit" — preaching hours, meeting attendance, organisational loyalty, abstention from worldly behaviour. The works are read as the basis of one's standing rather than the evidence of an already-given identity.

## Protestant Usage

Matthew 7:19 is part of the fruit test (vv. 15-20) Jesus applies to false prophets — those who appear like sheep but inwardly are predatory wolves. The fruit Jesus has in view is not field-service hours; it is the moral and spiritual quality of a teacher's work measured against Scripture. Pair Matthew 7:19 with Deuteronomy 18:20-22 (the false-prophet test of failed predictions) and the Watchtower's own catalogue of failed dates: 1874, 1914, 1925, 1975, the changing definitions of "this generation," the 1981 condemnation of the only-leaders-as-slave reading later adopted in 2012. Jesus says every tree not producing fine fruit is cut down. The Watchtower's structural pattern — predict, fail, blame followers, redefine, never apologise — is the pattern of a tree producing the wrong kind of fruit by Deuteronomy 18 and Matthew 7's standards alike.
