JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses cite ("love your enemies") as a cornerstone of their strict neutrality and pacifism. The Watchtower teaches that loving one's enemies means refusing all military service, political involvement, and national allegiance — and that the organisation's near-universal compliance with this standard is proof of Jehovah's holy spirit on the organisation. The JW claim is that only Jehovah's Witnesses truly live out this command as a body, making their peace record unique in church history and self-validating as evidence of the true faith.

Protestant Usage

The Protestant reading distinguishes between personal enemy-love and institutional accountability. Jesus commands individuals to love their enemies — to pray for persecutors, to refuse personal vengeance — but this does not collapse into organisational neutrality enforced by judicial committees. The historic peace churches (Quakers, Mennonites, Church of the Brethren) have practised voluntary pacifism for over four centuries without shunning, without judicial enforcement, and without civic withdrawal — proving that the JW method is not the only way to produce the "no wars" outcome. Bonhoeffer and the Confessing Church show that enemy-love can also take the form of active resistance to evil on behalf of the vulnerable, not merely passive non-participation. The key Protestant insight is that when pacifism is coerced by threat of disfellowshipping and family severance, it ceases to be the virtue Jesus commended and becomes organisational compliance held in place by fear rather than love.
