# Matthew 28:20

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things."

## JW Usage

The Watchtower applies "I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things" institutionally — Christ is with Jehovah's organisation as it carries out the disciple-making work, not personally with every believer. The phrase "conclusion of the system of things" is read as the period leading up to Armageddon, when the present satanic system gives way to God's Kingdom rule. The verse is treated as a promise of organisational presence rather than as a promise of personal indwelling presence.

## Protestant Usage

Jesus's promise is to his disciples directly — "I am with you all the days." Pair with Matthew 18:20 ("where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in their midst") and John 14:23 ("if anyone loves me, he will observe my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him"). The promise of Christ's continuing presence is mediated through the indwelling Spirit (John 14:16-17, 26), not through any earthly organisation. Heaven is the presence of God, and Christ's presence with his people begins now, wherever believers gather in his name. The "two-tier" framework that reserves heaven for 144,000 collapses against Jesus's own unrestricted promise here.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders synteleia tou aiōnos as "conclusion of the system of things" rather than the standard "end of the age." This is a systematic NWT translation choice across the New Testament (compare Matthew 13:39, 13:40, 13:49, 24:3) that re-codes the Greek aiōn ("age, era") into the Watchtower's technical term for the present satanic order. Standard English translations preserve "age" because aiōn names the redemptive-historical era — "this age / the age to come" — rather than a particular sociopolitical arrangement. The "system of things" phrasing inserts JW dogmatic vocabulary into the text and ties Jesus's promise to the Watchtower's specific eschatology.
