Matthew 24:34
Matthew 24:3434Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.
"This generation" is central to JW eschatology. The Watchtower has revised its interpretation at least six times as each predicted "generation" died off. The current teaching (since 2010) defines "this generation" as anointed Witnesses whose lives overlap with those alive in 1914 — a construction with no parallel in any language. Earlier interpretations included the 1914 generation itself, wicked humanity, and all anointed Christians.
The Greek hē genea hautē ("this generation") in every other Gospel occurrence refers to Jesus' contemporaries — , 12:41–42, 23:36, . There is no linguistic basis for making the sole exception. provides the interpretive key: it replaces Matthew's "abomination of desolation" with "Jerusalem surrounded by armies," making the first-century fulfilment explicit. The geographical details — "those in Judea flee," "pray it does not occur on a Sabbath" — only make sense for first-century Jewish believers. If "this generation" means what it plainly says everywhere else, the Olivet Discourse was fulfilled in AD 70 and the entire 1914 framework collapses.
