# Matthew 18:20

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.”

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses acknowledge Matthew 18:20 but generally restrict its application to small-group meetings conducted under the organisation's oversight. The Watchtower's ecclesiology requires that Jesus' presence be mediated through the Governing Body's channel — the "faithful and discreet slave" of Matthew 24:45. Consequently, "gathered in my name" is read as gathering under organisational approval rather than as an independent promise of Christ's presence wherever believers meet. The verse is not typically used to argue that any two or three Christians outside the Watchtower structure enjoy Christ's presence in the same way.

## Protestant Usage

Protestant theology reads Matthew 18:20 as a promise that Christ is present wherever his people gather in his name — not contingent on any institutional authorisation. This verse sits three verses after the binding-and-loosing extension in Matthew 18:18, forming the climax of the passage: the gathered assembly has authority (v. 18), agreement in prayer (v. 19), and Christ's personal presence (v. 20). The promise undercuts the Watchtower's claim that a centralised visible organisation headquartered in one city is necessary for Jesus to be "among" his people. As the argument in the Governing Body challenge observes, Jesus said "where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am" — not "where the Governing Body has authorised a Kingdom Hall." The visible church Jesus promised is wherever his people gather in his name, without a headquarters or an exclusive channel.
