# Matthew 17:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Six days later Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John along and led them up into a lofty mountain by themselves."

## JW Usage

The Watchtower treats the Transfiguration narrative as a symbolic vision Jesus gave to Peter, James, and John in preparation for his coming death. Because JW theology denies conscious post-mortem existence, the appearance of Moses and Elijah is read as a divinely staged vision representing the Law and the Prophets pointing to Christ — not as a real encounter with conscious individuals. Matthew 17:1 functions as narrative setup; the doctrinal reframing happens at v. 9 with Jesus's word horama ("vision").

## Protestant Usage

Matthew 17:1 sets the scene for one of the strongest Synoptic testimonies to conscious post-mortem existence. Pair with Luke 9:30-31 (the parallel that names what Moses and Elijah are discussing — Jesus's "departure" / exodos at Jerusalem) and Matthew 17:9 (Jesus calls it a horama, a vision). The Watchtower's "vision" defence concedes the point: even in visions, God depicts the dead as conscious, never as non-existent. Stephen's vision in Acts 7:55-56 showed Jesus actually standing at God's right hand; Peter's vision in Acts 10 conveyed a real divine command. Visions in Scripture reveal real heavenly realities, not fictional sets. Moses died (Deuteronomy 34:5-6) and yet appears, conscious, conversing — exactly what soul-sleep doctrine cannot allow.
