Matthew 12:32
Matthew 12:3232Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come.
The Watchtower reads "this system of things" and "that to come" as the JW two-age framework — the present wicked system under Satan's rule (to be destroyed at Armageddon) and the future paradise-earth millennium under Christ's rule. Blasphemy against the Spirit is read as deliberate opposition to Jehovah's purposes, with the warning that no atonement is available either now or in the coming age.
The verse repeats the triangulation of v. 31 with sharper contrast: blasphemy against the Son of Man is forgivable; blasphemy against the Spirit is not. The Spirit is treated as a distinct person in his own right — with a higher line of protection than the Son's earthly mission carried in incarnation. Pair with (Peter telling Ananias "you have not lied to men but to God" — equating lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God) for the apostolic recognition of the Spirit as fully divine and personally identifiable.
Two NWT renderings carry doctrinal weight here. First, "holy spirit" is again lower-cased — the systematic NWT pattern that depersonalises the Spirit. Second, the NWT renders aiōn as "system of things" rather than "age." Standard English translations render "in this age, or in the age to come" because aiōn is the standard NT term for an era or epoch of redemptive history. The NWT's "system of things" is a Watchtower technical term — it ties Jesus's saying to the JW eschatological framework (Satan's "system of things" being destroyed at Armageddon, the "new system" arriving in paradise) rather than to the standard biblical-theological "this age / age to come" category. The substitution is consistent across the NWT and re-codes Jesus's phrasing for JW dogmatic vocabulary.
