# Matthew 11:30

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "For my yoke is kindly, and my load is light."

## JW Usage

Matthew 11:30 is invoked by JW publications as encouragement for Witnesses who feel the weight of organisational expectations. The "kindly yoke" and "light load" are reinterpreted as the privilege of Kingdom service — preaching, meeting attendance, and obedience to the Governing Body's direction. Witnesses who feel the burden are encouraged to adjust their attitude rather than question whether the burden is the one Jesus described.

## Protestant Usage

Hold the verse up as a diagnostic. Jesus says his yoke is easy and his burden is light. If a Witness experiences perpetual anxiety about field-service hours, judicial committees, the next "new light," and survival at Armageddon, the burden being carried is not the one Jesus offers. Pair Matthew 11:30 with Galatians 5:22-23 (the fruit of the Spirit — "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law") and Acts 15:10 (the legalistic yoke "no one has been able to bear"). The verse is pastoral, not polemical: it gives the Witness permission to notice the disconnect between Jesus's promise and the experience of organisational life.
