Matthew 11:28

NT Gospels
Matthew 11:28
28Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

JW Usage

JWs accept that Jesus invites the weary to come to him, but in practice the invitation is mediated through the organisation. The Watchtower's programme of twice-weekly meetings, monthly field service reporting, personal study of Watchtower publications, and loyalty demonstrations means the "rest" Jesus offers is experienced through organisational activity, not through a direct personal relationship with Christ apart from the channel.

Protestant Usage

Jesus says "Come to me, all you who are toiling and loaded down, and I will refresh you" (). The invitation is direct and personal — "Come to me," not "Come to my organisation." Verses 29-30 add: "my yoke is easy and my load is light." Jesus does not promise to help carry a heavy burden; he says the yoke itself is easy. If a JW's experience of the faith is dominated by anxiety about meeting attendance, field service hours, and organisational loyalty, that is not the yoke Jesus described. reinforces the exclusive directness: "No one comes to the Father except through me." The vine- and-branches imagery of shows branches connected directly to the vine — there is no organisational trunk between Christ and the believer. uses intensely personal pronouns: "who loved me and gave himself for me." The New Testament consistently presents the Christian life as a direct relationship with Christ, not one mediated through an institutional channel.
